Commissioning
The first stage is a consultation meeting in a relaxed and friendly environment. Iain will lead you step by step through the process, covering practical details and listening empathetically to your ideas, whether detailed or half formed. You will see examples of work and samples of stone.
He will then design the stone and send a drawing showing the design in detail, and an estimate of the cost. There is then opportunity for adjustments and amendments until you are happy with the design.
When the design has been approved by the cemetery or church, the stone can be ordered from the quarry, and work can commence. Many clients like to visit Iain’s workshop to see work in progress. When completed Iain carefully fixes the stone in place.
Because of the process a handcrafted stone can take anything between three months and a year to complete, and the cost will vary, depending on the type of stone, the complexity of the design, the length of the inscription, and the distance from the workshop to the cemetery. As a guide, the price for a headstone will generally start at around £1200, but Iain will try to make something whatever your budget may be.
