Bat_Finial

This sculpture was carved for Cliveden Conservation Workshops Ltd, for Dauntsey's School in Wiltshire. It is a new finial to replace the original which was no longer extant and is fixed on the gable high above the front door. The style of the sculpture references the existing carving which decorates the building, and it had to be carved boldly enough to be legible from the ground.

The brief for the project stipulated a bat or bats (which live in the roof space), the school crest and moto, and the year 2006, and the column on which it stands had to reflect the original of which we still had a fragment. I really wanted to make the most of the bat silhouette and having him fly out of a big letter D (for Dauntsey's) proved to be a good solution. My design was chosen by the students, from a shortlist.
