Iain Cotton stone-letters-sculpture

On this headstone to Angela Appleby I made the image of open hands central to the design. The hands are realised as handprints – negative spaces which can be read both as an image of a life that has been taken away, but also as an image of a life that has left a profound impression (on so many others). There is something paradoxical in the way the hands are reversed which underlines this theme of presence and absence.
